Port Authority: A Critical Element of the Supply Chain - IIEI-125

Course Description:This course provides the student with the knowledge and understanding needed to utilize the full range of capabilities of a modern Port Authority. It examines in detail all of the products and services that can be available through a port authority, whether the port is a land or seaport. The special concerns and issues related to a port authority, including special terminology, form the backdrop for identifying the major issues and challenges facing the modern port authority. This course teaches the student how to investigate popular port authorities and their capabilities online.

Note: The majority of the course content is obtained online in a self-discovery process under the direction of the instructor. This course requires students to have access to Internet search engines to complete assignments.

Prerequisite: Exporting/ Importing Environment course (IIEI-201) suggested but not required. 

Course Credit: 1.5 Credit Hours

  • Recognize the port operations of a typical port.

Port Authority Ancillary Services

  • Know the types of supporting services that typically can be provided within the context of a port authority.

International Terminal Issues

  • Identify the complexity of processing requirements of an international terminal.

Intermodal Shipments through a Port Authority

  • Analyze intermodal shipments and a port authority’s role in intermodal shipments.

Critical issues about wharfage, dockage, container rules, warehouses & Free Trade Zones located within a port authority.

  • Interpret rules, activities, and critical issues within a port. 

Port Authority Monitoring and Control

  • Evaluate the current state-of-the-art processes and technology available to monitor and control the modern port authority.

Future of Port Authorities

  • Understand the future possibilities open to port authorities as to the goods and services they might offer.

Super Ports

  • Recognize what value elements are important to becoming a “super port.”

Technology

  • Describe how technology can be used in a modern port authority
